A Better Morning

I’m so excited to kick off the first post of my healthy living series, #getfitwithashleyj

Not only am I wanting to be more healthy physically, but also in all aspects of my life. Mornings are such an essential part of living a healthy lifestyle, and I thought that January would be a perfect time to make over how I do mornings. I have never been a morning person, ever. However, I do think that there is something special about starting your day off right, cup of coffee & bible in hand, preparing to tackle the day ahead. I hope to be able to give you some realistic advice, and maybe you will rethink how you approach your mornings.

The Night Before:

Believe it or not, preparing for a healthy morning actually starts the night before. There’s a certain “routine” that I like to follow before my head even hits the pillow.

  1. Set out your clothes for the next day – Have an early morning workout? Get your clothes, shoes and workout bag assembled so there is no excuse to be late. Need to be to work early? Getting your outfit together the night before frees up so much time for the next morning.
  2. Write your to-do list – I have to complete this step in  order to fall asleep. This helps me so much by getting my stray thoughts/worries about the next day down on paper.
  3. Set your alarms – Yes alarms as in more than one. I used to be the person that woke up after the first alarm, but marriage has changed that for me. Not passing the blame or anything but they do say that some of your spouse’s habits can rub off on you 😉

The Morning Of:

  1. Coffee – The first thing I do in the morning is make my coffee. I just can’t do mornings without it. I know to be healthier, you need to drink water before your coffee but I just can’t bring myself to do it. Any advice, friends?
  2. Resist the social media temptation – This one is a struggle for me. I seriously need to be more accountable with this one. On the mornings that I’ve successfully cut out social media, it has immensely improved my focus for the day. Let’s do this one together, sister! Who’s with me?
  3. Breakfast & Devotionals – These two go hand in hand for me. I’m just not the kind of person that can skimp on breakfast, and honestly it’s not good for you if you do. The reason why I do my devos while I eat is because I know that I’m going to eat breakfast no matter what. By doing my devotions at the same time, I know that I’m going to get my day started off right.
  4. Quickly tidy up – This is not the time to deep clean your place. This is the time to make your bed (trust me, it makes a difference), pick up any stray laundry on the floor, and put your dishes in the dishwasher. Having a tidier living space definitely helps clear your mind for the day.
  5. Get moving – Working out in the morning is definitely a game-changer. No, it’s not for everyone but you can make yourself a morning workout person. I love that working out in the morning hours ensures that I’m going to get my workout in. Knowing that I go my exercise in for the day instantly gives me a peace of mind for the day ahead.

By giving you these tips, I’m by no means saying that every morning is perfect for me. I still mess up, get lazy, or press snooze too many times. The most important thing to remember when trying to life a healthy lifestyle is that every day is a new day. Every morning is an opportunity to make yourself healthier all across the board. Health isn’t solely based on the number on the scale, it’s so much more than that. I hope that my tips inspire you to make 2016 your year to be the healthiest version of yourself! Let’s ditch the typical New Year’s resolutions and make lifestyle changes that stick.

What is an essential part of your morning routine?

It’s so hard to resist the social media before breakfast too! I’ll try it with you! -Brooke Stoff

  2. Great post, Ashley! All of these ideas are awesome in making for better, more productive mornings and I really need to get my act together and start working on these areas! I am definitely a 3-4 alarm person in the morning…it’s just so warm in bed! What motivates me to get up sometimes is when I go on Instagram and see pictures of other ladies who are already tackling the day bright and early and it makes me feel lazy so I jump out of bed! Haha. I do really want to stop going on social media first thing in the morning though (even though like I said sometimes IG does help!) because it can be such a time suck. I also want to start picking out outfits the day before so I don’t have to rummage through the closet in a panic! Basically, I want to improve on all the things you’ve mentioned 🙂 Thank you for the motivation! xo

    • I can definitely feel your pain when it comes to mornings. I have struggled for years with trying to be productive and start my day right. I agree that seeing others already tackling their day is a huge motivation to get moving! I am a huge believer in preparing the night before for the day ahead to eliminate stress in the morning. I hope that my ideas can help you! 🙂

I have to set multiple alarms. I start at 6:15 so I will be awake at 7. I try to pick an outfit for the next day at night, but it doesn’t always happen. I do avoid social media in the morning, I know I’ll get sucked in and won’t get up for another 10-15 min. These are great tips!

    • I agree with you! There are some nights where I just feel exhausted and don’t even care about what I wear the next day. Social media definitely can be a big time waster for me in the mornings but some mornings I get sucked into it anyways! I am the same way in that I will lay in bed an extra 15 mins just looking through my social media! Thank you so much and I hope that these tips are helpful for you 🙂 xo!

You have such a beautiful blog! I love your writing style and your photography and ugh.. just everything! My mornings have to start with coffee (especially when I’m back at school) which is quite funny because I know for a fact that caffeine has 0% effect on me. Oh well, YAY for placebos! I’m excited to read more from you! 🙂

Very helpful tips, love them! Breakfast is definitely important and there’s nothing better than waking up in the morning and starting the day off with a hearty meal! Even though I am rushed most times in the morning to get out the door.. I still have to fix myself a quick breakfast!

    xo, Lynna

    • I totally agree! If I skip breakfast, it seriously throws my whole day out of whack. It’s such a great routine to get into, and it helps to not be starving later in the day. Thank you so much for reading, Lynna! 🙂

  6. Lovely post!

Since having kids , I have become a morning workout person otherwise it would not happen.

I like your idea of no social media in the morning. I am going to try that next week.

My mornings are so rushed with the kids and I need to really do better at our morning routine so that we are less stressed!

    Thanks for sharing your tips.

  7. So excited to have discovered your blog after you commented on my post! I followed you on Insta and Pinterest.

  8. I’m 100% with you on the daily devotional with breakfast! I even sometimes read my bible verses on my phone on the way to work or whatever I have planned for the day (if I’m running late!)

    • I love starting my mornings that way! Sometimes if I’m running late, I will push it off until later.. I should definitely try to utilize my Bible apps more that way I don’t have any excuses to not dig into the word 🙂 Thank you so much for reading my post!
