The Year of Less || Tips for a Versatile Wardrobe

Happy Friday! Today I’m sharing some of my favorite tips I’ve learned from my journey to less. I’ve learned some great lessons so far that I’m just dying to share! If you want to learn more about building a versatile wardrobe, keep on reading! As a side note, I’m not perfect regarding this concept of “less” and I’m always open to learning. Leave me your best tips in the comments! Also be sure to follow me on Instagram for my weekly lifestyle posts.

1.Neutrals, Neutrals, Neutrals: Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing bad about a pop of color. I’ve learned through this process that I’m more likely to grab a grey sweater than a bright pink one. Sticking to the basics: grey, white, black, tan, taupe, will give you so many more outfit combinations. I’m also having a moment with olive pieces, and I find myself reaching for them in my closet more often than not.

2.Basics for days: Never underestimate the power of a good basic. They really are the most under-rated items to invest in for your closet. More often than not, life isn’t glamorous. It’s the weekend, and you’re running errands or having a move night in. What do you feel like wearing? A good basic v-neck! #basicteesforthewin Also Madewell just happens to make my favorite high quality tees. And they’re under $20! I like to size up for a slightly oversized fit.

3.Layering Pieces: Jackets, vests, and cardi’s make the world go round. Okay maybe I’m exaggerating but in terms of your wardrobe, they are everything. Don’t be afraid to branch out either. If you don’t think you could rock a denim vest or denim jacket, you just need to try them on! I like to stick with my true size when it comes to layering pieces, unless it’s an oversized cardigan.

4.All About the Shoes: I may have made this a title for one of my blog posts? I used to never care about shoes. I would wear the same two pairs all the time. There’s nothing wrong with that, but a basic outfit can really be dressed up with the shoes you wear. I got rid of alot of mine during my decluttering process, but kept a few of my high quality favorites. In my opinion, Steve Madden makes the best quality shoe for the price. Target is another great budget-friendly option, but they really don’t last as long.

5.Jewelry: This one is actually kind of funny. I used to be the queen of statement necklaces back in highschool, until I got a retail job at a jewelry store and got tired of it. I went years without hardly wearing any accessories. I’m definitely finding my style again, but I’m going for more dainty, timeless pieces. Madewell’s jewelry is by far a favorite of mine.

Minimizing my wardrobe has been so exciting so far. I hope to expand to other areas of my life throughout 2017. My hope is that these tips can be helpful to those looking to downsize their wardrobe!

I’m so looking forward to this weekend! Alex and I have the chance to celebrate my mom’s birthday. I’m looking forward to a fun weekend spent with family!

Love Always,

Ashley J.

These are great tips! I’ve always been more of an accessories person than clothes person. I will wear the same clothes over and over again and just change up my accessories. I have some nice pieces of jewelry, but I love inexpensive costume pieces that make a statement. I’ve gotten more into buying better quality shoes as well. Quality over quantity!

Thank you so much friend! That really is a great way to change up your outfit. I’ve gotten a few pieces of jewelry since I got rid of anything that didn’t fit my style anymore. Jewelry is so much fun and I’m hoping to experiment more with rings + bracelets. I always love the outfits that you put together! 🙂

  2. I love this, Ashley! Totally agree with everything but specifically about neutrals! I have so many neutrals that I wear way more often than patterned clothes. I love layering also! It can completely change a look without having to buy more clothes or accessories! Love it.

Thank you so much girl! Neutrals really do make all the difference. Anymore I’d rather have a smaller wardrobe that I can mix and match rather than a bunch of clothes that just don’t go together. You always have the best layered looks!
